Longing for Home

I miss home alot, especially this time of year. I can't wait to get back to South Texas and be with family. One of my favorite things this time of year is Tamales. I love them sooooo much, I can't wait to get to my in laws house and stuff my face. I've been missing them so much that since I don't know how to make them myself I thought I'd make something to show my love of the holidays and tamales. I made these little Christmas trees out of the corn husk that are used to wrap tamales. I didn't take pictures as I was making them but here is a short photoless tutorial.

Supplies:
Corn Husk
styrofome cone (floral dept at craft store)
Glue gun
Glue sticks
School glue
Glitter
Mini tree ornaments

1. Tear corn husk into smaller leaves.
2. Glue corn husk in layers, each layer shorter than the bottom.
3. Once you've finished all your layers, take a stripe of corn husk and tye the top.
4. Cut off leave on top of the tied area.
5. Put glue on leaves where you'd like glitter.
6. Sprinkle glitter.
7. Glue on ornaments.

Now you have a lovely little tamale tree. If only tamales grew on trees, I'd have a yard full :)
Merry Christmas!

Yummy!

I had never made Gingerbread men before, but my son was obsessed with making some. He recently read the story, The Gingerbread Man, at school and loved it. They even went on an adventure through the school looking for their runaway gingerbread man. Today we made our own, no not from scratch, but from a mix I bought at Joanns. I filled plastic sandwich bags with icing and let him at them. We both had fun decorating them. They might not be they pretty but they were yummy, and will be a great memory. Next year maybe my little one will help decorate too.

My little guy tasting his cookie.

Duff better watch out, that green iced gingerbread man was his first try alone.

Finished Mural

This is one of the murals I did for our little cousins. It came out rather nice. Only 5 days until Christmas, I'm still lacking a few gifts and I've ran out of wrapping paper. Looks like I may have to head out to the stores today and fight my way through the crowds :(

Later tonight we will be baking gingerbread men to leave out for Santa, that should be fun. I can't wait to see how my son decorates them.

It's good to be Crafty

One Christmas years ago my sister, cousins, and I were in love with the New Kids on the Block. A year later we were over them and everyone knew except for one of our uncles. He thought he had bought us the coolest gift ever, New Kids on the Block sweaters. We were all horrified. There was no way we'd be caught wearing NKOB sweaters, they were so lame. My poor heartbroken uncle took them all back.
Well here I am 14 or so years later shopping at Target when I find High School Musical 3 and Camp Rock dvd games. They look so cool, I want them for myself (yes I am a fan of all the Disney musicals). I buy them for my little cousins who are 12 &13. I call their moms only to find out that the girls are "too cool" for HSM & Camp Rock. My heart just broke. What will I do now, I'm not about to stand in a huge line to return them only to have to search for a new gift. This is were being crafty comes in handy. They've just had their rooms painted and would like to have murals painted. So that's what I'm doing, painting murals for Christmas. I've finished one, and should have the second done after New Years.
The moral of my story is "Kids be kind to your family members that give you bad gifts, someday you will be that old out of touch adult doing the gift giving." Happy Holidays.

Tutorial- Recycled Catalog Christmas Tree

It's Christmas time and it seems like we've been receiving catalogs everyday for the past month. Most to places I've never even heard of. I thought I would put them to use instead of trashing them. After thinking for a while I decided to make this mini tree similar to one I had seen on the Martha Stewart site. Hers was made of newspaper, black and white very elegant. Since I have 2 small boys, I've given up on elegant decor and settled on fun and festive. Which I think my little tree really is.

This project is fairly simple, a little time consuming but you can even let your little ones help.

Supplies:
Catalogs, magazines, junk mail (any paper that needs recycling)
1 Thick straw
1 Strand of floral wire
Some kind of circular base ( I used the end of a spool of tulle, but you can use cardboard)
Scissors
Paper Trimmer
Hold punch
Tape
Glue
Fun foam (sticky)

1. Collect supplies.

2. Bend floral wire and place inside straw. Tape straw to base.

3. Cut stack of squares out of catalogs.
50- 70 each of square sizes:
6"x6" , 5 1/2"x 5 1/2" , 5"x5", 4 1/2"x 4 1/2", 4"x4",
3 1/2"x 3 1/2", 3"x3" , 2 1/2" x 2 1/2", 2"x2", 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"

4. Poke holes in center of squares, then stack them on the straw base largest to smallest.
Add a drop of glue between every few pages for stability.

5. Curve top of straw and floral wire.

6. Cut out star shapes from sticky fun foam and stick on straw.

You can also add glitter, or snow to decorate your tree.

Have fun.

Little Break

I had to take a little break from the blog to get some work done, and orders out. Check back later today for a short tutorial.

Christmas Cards- Time to get them mailed!

Everyone is waiting. It's not too late to send out those Christmas cards, or maybe send out some Happy New Year's cards a little early.

HeySaylor has some really great holiday cards that feature vintage Barbie and Ken dolls. In some hilarious situations.

Here is a little about the genius behind HeySaylor, Christopher Laris:

I've collected vintage Barbies for a couple of years and I've been making my cards for a lil' over a year. It started as a joke with friends. I'd set up a quick scene with my Barbies , photograph it and print it up on paper and give them as "cards" for birthdays, get well, sorry you didn't get that raise. After some persuasion I decided to put my Barbies to work and make them earn their keep by featuring them on real greeting cards.

It all started with Football Ken and Slumber Party. The response was good so I thought maybe I was on to something. I've been very lucky and appreciative that my silly little hobby has been well receieved.

Life in the early 60's is what inspires me- the fashion, interior design and how Barbie reflected the times. Everything from her clothes, which were so detailed and incredibly well made to her mid-century inspired dream houses.

My favorite elements to use are any Barbie stuff made up to 1964.

Crafty Christmas Day 24

Are you still looking for that unique piece of jewelry to give as a gift this Christmas? Well the Bead Genie may be able to grant your wish for a one of a kind gift. With so many beautiful piece of jewelry to choose from your bound to fall in love.

Here's a little about Bead Genie:

How long have you been crafting? I have been making jewelry almost 6 years. It went from part-time to full-time business in April 2005 when I left my engineering job to stay at home with my kids and focus on jewelry.

What inspires your art? I rarely plan my art. I occasionally have ideas I sketch based on something I've seen - like an old chandelier or an elaborate piece of ancient Grecian jewelry; but most often I get inspired by the colors and textures of the components I use.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork? I specialize in chainmaille. In fact, many of the art shows I do, I only show my chainmaille. I love sterling silver and adore gemstones - especially topaz (blue and white), amethyst, citrine, peridot, rubies, and sapphires. Yes, I have expensive taste!

I'm all for recycling, and being able to make something special out of something that you once loved and can no longer use is ideal. I can't tell you how many skateboards I've seen broken and tossed out. When I came across 2ReVert I was amazed with how cool their jewelry was. Everything is made out of Recycled skateboards. What a great use of recycling.

Here's a little about 2ReVert:

How long have you been crafting?
2ReVert is a team (husband/wife), but we have both been crafting and creating things with our hands since we were little.

What inspires your art?
We work with broken skateboard decks, and they are so inspiring all on their own. They have many colours and graphics and some even have the past owners hand writing, so that is fun to see.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
For 2ReVert we love the sanding, it brings out all the natural inner colours of the skateboards as well as make the pieces feel like smooth smooth rocks, they feel great just to touch.

What sets you apart from other artist?
For 2ReVert we love to be able to come up with different designs and see how far we can go with the skateboards. We strive to get our orders out the next business day and have prompt delivery services, we care about each piece and remember them all.

Craft Christmas Day 23

Well Christmas is getting close... very close, I don't need a calender to tell me. All I need to do is look at the tv to see that once again my son is watching Alvin and the Chipmunks and singing along to "I just want a Hula Hoop". I'm sure we all remember a time when a Hula Hoop was so much fun. Well now we can relive those times with adult hula hoops from Sassy Hoops. I met Julia last month at our EtsyDallas Jingle Bash. She is such a ball of energy, the whole show she was in front of her booth hula hooping, showing others how, even letting the little ones in on the fun. One of Sassy Hoops hula hoops would be a great fit, not only is it super fun, but a great way to work off all those Christmas goodies.

Here's a little about Sassy Hoops:

How long have you been crafting?
I've been seriously crafting for the past 15 years. I've experimented with all sorts of mediums like jewelry, purses, knitted and crocheted items. Through a life-changing process, I discovered hula hooping. I began making my own hoops in 2003 for friends and family. There was quite a learning curve on perfecting the process, discovering what worked and what didn't work.

What inspires your art?
My twin girls inspire me. They are 19 months old and are discovering the joy of colors. I love coming up with new color combos. I test spin each hoop after I create it to see what kinds of swirls it makes in motion. With each hoop I make, I think about how happy it's going to make the new owner. That little piece of joy inspires me to make more.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I admit it. I'm a tape junkie. I love when clients suggest new tape combinations that I haven't thought of. In the beginning, I spent a lot of time experiementing with different types of tapes to make the best hoop. I've settled on mirror tape for flash and gaffer tape for a nice grip action. I'm also in love with glow in the dark tape. I'm in the process of creating LED light up hoops, which is fun because I do a lot of soldering and technical work. I still have a few challenges to overcome with the LED hoops before I can be satisfied with the quality.

What sets you apart from other artist?
Some people may think I'm taking major liberties calling hula hoops "art", but I really think of them as kinetic sculptures. The best part is you bring them to life. I like knowing that each hoop is also a tool for fitness and health. I've battled with exercise, body image and weight all my life. When I'm hooping, I don't hold back. I let all of those insecurities go. My hope is to inspire others to do the same.

You can find all colors and sizes of hula hoops in Julia's Etsy shop http://www.sassyhoops.etsy.com

Crafty Christmas Day 22

Jewelry making has never been one of my things, but every now and then I feel the need to string some beads. When this happens, plain beads and charms just wont cut it, I need something special, one of a kind. Last time I was looking for a Dia De Los Muertos style charm I found Gaea handmade beads on Etsy. They are absolutely stunning. So detailed and colorful, no two exactly the same.

Here's a little about Gaea:

How long have you been crafting?
As a business, officially, since 2003, but have enjoyed jewelry and clay since childhood.

What inspires your art?
I find inspiration in the most whakado places! Out T.V. is on the fritz and all the colors are wonky so every thing is magenta I had quite a few fun jewelry pieces come out of that. Mostly I am inspired by nature and my kids. Customers are also very inspiring. They often have special projects and requests. I love that!

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
Clay is my primary material it is amazing to put your soul into a little clay lump and have a memento of that moment. But I have also been having great fun with metals lately. Copper wire is relatively inexpensive and fun to work with. Pounding and bending it mostly. It is a great compliment to the earthy clay.

What sets you apart from other artist?
My absolute joy at being able to create. I think that effects my style as well. I get very grumpy when too much time has passed and I've not had my hands in clay. Someone once told me about being an artist that they couldn't live with out creating and they don't think about creating they just do. I think most artist have that driving desire.

You can find more of Gaea's work in her Etsy shop http://www.gaea.etsy.com

Crafty Christmas Day 21

Shopping for boys is hard. It seems like when it comes to clothing everything is so generic. Jodie Flowers however is trying to change that. Instead of cover tshirts in puppies and trucks, she has let her imagination take over and come up with these awesome little monster designs. Boys are sure to love them.

Here's a little about JodieFlowers:

How long have you been crafting?
I have been crafting all my life. When I was little I made clothes for myself and my dolls. I went on to College and got my Bachelor of Arts Degree and now I craft in every meduim! I love them all! Painting, ceramics, sculpture, journal making, printmaking, sewing and making strange things out of polymer clay.

What inspires your art?
All different kinds of things inspire me. Color for sure! LOL! I have an almost 4 year old little boy that inspires me to make cool characters. His cartoon inspire me, his books and my childhood books, nature, the sea, fabrics inspire me....Etsy inspires me!

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I don't have a favorite material to work in. I love them all! Sewing, recycling found objects, upcycling, painting, ceramics (this is my favorite at the moment), I am now even exploring Encaustic painting! I really go full force into everything that I am into at the moment! Love it all!

What sets you apart from other artist?
What I think sets me apart from other artists is my craftsman "woman" ship. I am very neat, clean, detailed and I put lots of love and passion into what I do and I think it shows. Not to toot my own horn or anything! LOL!

You can get your little monster one of Jodie Flower's monsters on Etsy at http://www.jodieflowers.etsy.com

Crafty Christmas Day 20

I'm not the biggest fan of winter in Dallas. I'm a South Texas girl, and I'm acustom to green grass and leaves in the middle of winter. So when I look out side and the trees are leave less the sky is gloomy and cold it really makes me miss home. I love to be surrounded with color. MKanvinde is a great artist that uses color to its fullest potential. As I look through her artwork I feel at home again, such warm vibrant colors take away my dreary mood.

Here's a little about MKanvinde:

How long have you been crafting?
I have always had an inclination for art since childhood, but I decided to make my hobby into full time profession 3 years back.

What inspires your art?
Life is my biggest inspiration. There is so much beauty in this world and my art tries to capture this beauty from my surrounding.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I love to experiment with different techniques to create exciting work. My medium is mostly acrylic paint and sometimes watercolours. I am also an Certified Folk Artist and will be happy to take custom orders to create specials pieces of art.

What sets you apart from other artist?
I love bright and bold colours. My art is vibrant and inspirational. There is enough sorrow in the world and so I try to create artwork that gives pleasure and peace to me and the viewers.

Crafty Christmas Day 19

Last month as I was logging into Etsy I noticed a print on the front page. It was of a little boy in a Batman costume. I had to click on it and take a look closer, it reminded me of my oldest son. As I started to browse MikieP's shop I fell in love with all the illustrations of children in superhero costumes. Then I ran across the illustration above, a little boy asleep in his Spiderman costume. If the kid had brown hair it would be my son. He lives in his Spiderman costume, everyday for over a year now he wears it, we've gone through two alreadym bought him a new Batman costume, but he insist that he must be Spiderman. I will probably be ordering this print very soon.

Here's a little about MikieP:
How long have you been crafting?
Well I started crafting when Macrame Art was real popular.
I remember my Mom making this moNSTer Owl with gOOgly eyes. I would grab my crayons and sit down with her to join in on the fun :)

What inspires your art?
Two things that greatly inspire me are my wife Raven and the things she dreams up...and my Childhood... both I wouldn't change for the world! :) Oh, and you should check out her Etsy shop too! http://ravenx.etsy.com

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
My most favorite method in doing my art would have to be mixing my Illustrations into real Photographs. I love to think my little people are right outside our window playing.

What sets you apart from other artist?
I cant say that anyone thing sets me apart from other artist because there are sooooo many great one out their like others I lOVE what I do and work hard on making it the best to my ability . I would just like to thank everyone on Etsy & elsewhere...from the bottom of my Heart for the support and kindness that I have found. I've found a lot of it on Etsy for sure...if the world was more like Etsy, it sure would be a better place.

Crafty Christmas Day 18

Like most women I'm always on the search for that perfect finishing accessory for an outfit. I found some really great handbags that are made by a member of my local EtsyDallas street team. Lolafalk make beautifully unique handbags, just looking through her shop I found 3 that would match perfectly with some of my favorite outfits.

Here's a little about Lolafalk:

How long have you been crafting?

From a production standpoint, I've been sewing for nearly a year and a half. This may not seem like a long time, but when you consider that I sew almost every day, anywhere from 4-10 hours, then you can see how I've become pretty adept at it! From a design standpoint (and when the Lolafalk brand was officially "born"), I started selling my handbags on Etsy about 7 months ago.

What inspires your art?
So many things inspire me, I have a huge collage in my studio consisting of magazine pictures, photographs and found objects - just looking at it is like creative fuel for my mind. Throughout my life I've always had the desire and passion in me to create and make a statement, what's nice is finally finding the most perfect outlet for it - and being able to make a living doing what I love! Here are a few examples of what I look to for inspiration:
- Fashion designers who take a funky, intrepid approach to their designs (John Galliano, Betsy Johnson, John Fluevog); who are sophisticated yet quirky (LaCroix, Prada); and who truly show their personality through their designs (Gwen Stefani's LAMB, Chloe).
- Great architecture. It can run the gamut from the beautiful buildings in Valledolid (Mexico), Madrid and Brooklyn!
- Eclectic interior designers: Ruthie Sommers, Anna Spiro and Miles Redd to name a few. I also turn to the designsponge* blog for regular inspiration.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
While I do work from established patterns that I create for each product in my line, I really work best in a "free-form" fashion. By this I mean that I make no decisions on fabric selection, colors or textures until the very moment I'm about to start a new bag. The true essence of the style of my brand lies in eclectic pattern combinations and striving for the unexpected - if a color or fabric combination seems too predictable or makes too much sense to me, then that is an immediate "red flag" that I am heading in the wrong direction with a bag. Regarding my favorite types of materials - since what I do primarily revolved around fabric selection, I would classify my selection criteria as follows: if it's bright, shiny, funky, odd and makes you feel the slightest bit uneasy about whether or not it's a "workable" fabric - then as far as I'm concerned, it is perfect for the Lolafalk line!

What sets you apart from other artist?
I think my design process is really what sets me apart. There are so many cute handbags, totes and clutches being crafted by other designers, but I'm not striving for cute so much as I'm (by nature) selecting fabrics and creating patterns that are just...unexpected. I like juxtapositions - a shiny pink taffeta zipper pouch lined with a "granny-pattern" cotton fabric; neutral-toned, conservative plaid fabric combined with a seductive midnight blue satin, accented with a bright red rooster-printed cotton; houndstooth fabric mixed with a funky fruit-pattern cotton blend. This is the design chaos swirling around in my head, and somehow I'm able to bring it all together to create the subtly eclectic and understatedly quirky essence of the Lolafalk brand.

Crafty Christmas Day 17

I'm a fan of the rustic shabby chic look as well as vintage images. Signs and Salvage combines both to make these lovely little signs. Signs and Salvage has a variety of signs to choose from, many can be personalized.

Here's a little about Signs and Salvage:

How long have you been crafting?
Kristin -has been crafting in some form FOREVER. I have been salvaging furniture and vintage items for years and our signs were just a natural progression.
Jennifer- has always had a good eye for style and color. I have worked with local retailers and contractors for years, choosing color palettes for new and existing homes.

What inspires your art?
We have a "just go for it" attitude! If you are creating...you are bound to mess up once in a while!! It is just paint and wood (and LOTS of glitter) so you just have to go for sometimes. Most of our best sellers have been created when we are goofing off:) We are also very inspired by our surroundings (the Central Coast of California) and creating a piece of art from salvaged wood. We just go with the flow too. When we first started we had NO idea that vintage mermaids, vintage trailer trash, Twilight and vintage Virgin Marys would be our best selling signs! Who knew??? We were just doing Victorian Christmas and it just grew from there:)

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
We are like Lucy & Ethel!!! WE cut the wood on a HUGE saw...always say a little prayer first that we don't cut any fingers off! Our signs are made with salvaged wood...vintage artwork, glitter, beads & wire! Since we have families...it is easier for us to work from our homes. You should see my house...GLITTER everywhere!!!

What sets you apart from other artist?
Because we use salvaged materials...all of our signs are one of a kind. We also work VERY closely with each customer/shop and create signs that are custom and fit their specific need. We also do not have a minimum order...so that helps shops fill in as they go.

Take a look at everything Signs and Salvage has to offer in their Etsy shop http://signsandsalv

Craft Christmas Day 16

Looking for some unique home decor. Maybe a small housewarming gift. Mireio specializes in affordable luxurious housewares. The beautiful acorn sachets give off a lovely lavender scent.

Here is a little about Mireio:
How long have you been crafting?
A: I've been crafting since I was tiny. My mom taught me to embroider at 3 and I've been hooked ever since.

What inspires your art?
A: I'm inspired by the past. The textures and color and attention to detail in vintage pieces really speaks to me!

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
A: I love my sewing machine! I use a lot of vintage textiles and hunting for those is an obsession. I'm a huge fan of buttons--both vintage and handcrafted ceramic. I will admit, it's a temptation to hoard them. But there is a satisfaction that comes with pairing the right fabric with the right buttons to create the perfect mix. When that creation finds a new home, I'm elated!

What sets you apart from other artist?
A. My store name is Mireio, and that means to admire. I strive to make beautiful wares that you can admire, feel great about owning, and yet, not break the bank. Affordable luxury, it's my thing. I'm always looking for a way to bring beauty into what I do, and I think that shows!

You can visit Mireio's Etsy shop at http://www.Mireio.etsy.com

Have a friend that loves funky jewelry? Betsy Blonde has rockin' jewelry for them, or even yourself. From vintage chandelier silhouette designs, to rockin' hot pink guitars (this makes me giddy, it looks like my guitar) there is a design for everyone of your funky friends.

Here's a little about Betsy Blonde:

How long have you been crafting?
My whole life (in varying degrees). I have always played in my Auntie Betsy's sewing room - making necklaces with her buttons, sewing anything sparkly to something else sparkly... I could get lost in that place, even still now. This is my 3rd year of running my one woman business, betsy blonde, full time.

What inspires your art?
Old worldy charm mixed with modern fabulousness. I love old school tattoos, home wares, fashion & anything from the 50s.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
Acrylic / perspex sheeting is my most favorite material at the moment. It's possibilities are endless and limited only by my imagination - and Illustrator drawing skills! I love to combine the acrylic/perspex silhouette shapes on sparkly sterling silver chain. The contrast of what is essentially plastic with sterling silver is unusual but works so well.

What sets you apart from other artist?
Ohhh. I don't really know... I do what I do because I love it. Not to try to set myself apart from anyone. The best possible compliment I can receive is someone purchasing my jewelry. To have some one else love it as much as I do is the best payment in the world.

My favorite piece?
My chandelier necklace, hands down. It's not the most popular piece in terms of sales, it's my most favorite because it reminds me of my Auntie Wilma who died of breast cancer. I designed the shape based on a stylized version of the chandeliers that hang in her hallway. I loved to watch them sparkle when I was young. My auntie used to brush her long blonde hair in front of the mirror under the chandelier and when I wear the necklace it makes me smile and think of her as she was - happy, young and beautiful.

Do you know a pet lover that is hard to buy for? You know the person I'm talking about, the one that buys clothing for their dog, carries them around like a baby, and loves their animal like their own child. Well Creative Potential has the perfect gift for them, Furever Jewelry.

Here's a little about Creative Potential:

How long have you been crafting?
I have been crafting since birth! I can’t remember a time when art wasn’t a huge part of my daily life.

What inspires your art?
Mostly my experiences and interactions with other people. But I can be inspired by other artists, music, my children, nature…and most recently by my American Eskimo dog for my new FUREVER Jewelry Collection!

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I love metals…all metals and I love to mix them. I also really like fibers, yarns, fabric. Painting will always be a passion too.

What sets you apart from other artist?
Living true to myself. If I do that then I can’t help but be different because I believe we all have a unique story and voice.
This is one of my favorite quotes…

There is only one of you in all time,

this expression is unique.

And if you block it,

it will never exist through any other medium

and it will be lost.

Craft Christmas Day 13

When I came across Shelly's South Shore Jewelry earlier this year I was mesmerized with her work. A story came into my head, I could see a mother handing her grown daughter a small jewelry box and opening it to find a beautiful necklace. A necklace that had belong to her mother, and her grandmother, an heirloom. Shelly's South Shore Jewelry is the kind of jewelry that turns into an heirloom. Each piece has its own personality. The mermaid necklace above is by far my favorite.

Here's a little about Shelly's South Shore Jewelry:

How long have you been crafting?
I have been crafting off and on as time allows for 40 years. I recently on my 50th birthday started making jewelry.

What inspires your art?
The love of texture and color inspires my art. I have been attracted to sparkling colors since a very young age.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
My favorite materials are vintage and mis. found objects.

What sets you apart from other artist?
I find my art to be different from other artists. Alot of them go for beauty-personality and individuality is my style.

Crafty Christmas Day 12

Jewelry lovers will love Bijoullery. With such a great variety of pieces to choose from you will defiantly find that unique gift you've been searching for. With everything at affordable prices I was shocked to see that Bijoullery is having a holiday sale which goes on until December 18th. Get your Christmas orders in now.

Here's a little about Bijoullery:

How long have you been crafting?
I have been crafting my whole life, but the jewelry started when I had a boutique for plus size women, and the fact that it was hard to find trendy jewelry for the larger ladies, so I decided to make it!

What inspires your art?
Dreams, nature, faces.....just about anything! I keep a notebook to write down ideas as they come to me.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I love working with lampwork glass, and as of late Polymer clay creations. I also love sterling silver and Swarovski crystals. I usually begin by laying out a focal item, and creating ideas around it. I also make drawings in my notebook, but often as I lay out the pieces they change!

What sets you apart from other artist?
I sometimes think that what is popular are the dainting jewelry pieces with the small gemstones or thin wire wrapping. And I have done many a custom order for pieces like that, but I always come back to what I love.....big chunky pieces, that are unique, sometimes using the unsusual "ingredient" like eyelash yarn!

Crafty Christmas Day 4

I first ran across RockerBaby a few months ago and I completely fell in love with their clothes. Sadly I have no girls to dress in these wonderful outfits. If your looking for a special holiday dress for your little one and are tired of all the same old stuff that the department stores have to offer you should check out RockerBaby. Your little girls will be the best dressed at any holiday event in a RockerBaby Design.

Matilda, genious behind RockerBaby was kind enough to share a little about herself with us.

How long have you been crafting?
Well, I have been sewing since I was 7 years old , 27 years in total and I have been designing for as long as I can remember,

What inspires your art?
People get inspired by a lot of different things , what inspires me is those happy faces of All ROCKER BABY children that look so happy in our clothing , for me that is the best inspiration of all, it really puts a big smile on my face when our costumers are happy and their children to , that means a lot

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I love fabric, especially cotton, I find my self buying fabric for no reason , I just know that it will be used for something which at the moment I have no idea for what , I love to make perfection, I try really hard to debunk the saying of “ handmade is Poorly made”

What sets you apart from other artist?
Lately I have noticed that if someone makes something more follow of making the same thing which kind of limits you from using your creativity , we like to bring in a new view to children’s clothing , it is daring , but these are chances that I like to take through my designs and even the fabric choices that we make (me /my husband) Your imagination the different choices that you make set you apart from someone else.

Don't forget to take a look at RockerBaby's Etsy shop http://www.rockerbaby.etsy.com .

Crafty Christmas Day 3

Have no idea what to get art lover in your life, how about a print from Bound Staff Press. Bound Staff Press is the printmaking of Justin Miller, here's a little about Justin:

How long have you been crafting?
I have been making things with paper since my Dad first took me to his print shop as a child. I can remember reading a Richard Scary book with cutout cars that could be assembled, and making my own to supplement his selection. Soon I had a whole town.

What inspires your art?
I'm inspired by my constant spiritual journey to find deeper meaning in life. I use visual images to explore metaphors that I think will help to explain my experience.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I am very comfortable with drawing medias, but I love printing ink. I work primarily with linoleum relief cuts, but I also occasionally wander over to intaglio printing and letterpress.

What sets me apart from other artisans?
My work has a deep yet accessible narrative.

To purchase Justin's work visit his Etsy shop http://www.boundstaffpress.etsy.com

Crafty Christmas Day 2

Today's Crafty Christmas featured artist is Carol of IngeniouslyCreative. Her wearable works of art are a great gift for any art lover on your Christmas list.

Here's a little more about Carol:

How long have you been crafting?
I have been a mixed media artist for 35 years and before that I was a fashion designer in Milan.

What inspires your art?
My art is inspired by the whimsical side of my rich and deeply artistic nature most of the time. Whenever I need an art fix I go to Liverpool to the Walker Art Gallery or take the ferry to Dublin just for a day of nourishing my soul with art and architecture.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
Anything I can get my hands on are my favorite materials.

What sets me apart from other artisans? Perhaps the fact that my German mother was a portrait painter and sculptress and I traveled Europe with her as a child when she had her one woman shows at some of the leading galleries on the Continent. My exposure to art at an early age was to set my path for life. She died when I was very young, but her influence still shows itself in my art and my life in general.

Check out more of Carols work in her Etsy shop, http://www.ingeniouslycreative.etsy.com .

Crafty Christmas Day 1

This holiday season I'd like to encourage everyone to buy Handmade, and support artist. Etsy is a great place to find one of a kind gifts. Since I joined the Etsy Dallas street team I've had a chance to meet many great artist in my area. One of these artist is Shannon Moss of Bijoujuju www.bijoujuju.etsy.com. Shannon make beautiful graphic jewelry (pictured above). She is our first featured artist in the Crafty Christmas series.

A little about Shannon:

How long have you been crafting?
I started making some very spiffy pottery in preschool, and haven't stopped craftin' yet.

What inspires your art?
I am mostly inspired by nature, though my daughter's art, husband's art and design inspire me a lot. Sometimes I just get into a design by a fluke and it just works. You never know how inspiration will fall out.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I love mixed media. That's why graphic pendants are my absolute favorite, mixing graphic design, sterling silver, and other gems.

What sets you apart from other artist?
I think the combination of graphic design in my jewelry sets my work apart. I owe that to my hubby, who is a graphic designer and fine artist. He taught me how to navigate those complicated graphic design programs.

Don't forget to check out Shannon's Etsy shop www.bijoujuju.etsy.com .

Tutorial- Embroidery Hoop Artwork

I've been fixing up my office, and trying to find artwork to put up on the walls. As I was cleaning I found a few embroidery hoops that were sitting in a box forever. I remembered seeing them turned into frames for fabric scraps. Since I have a ton of fabric laying around also, I thought Perfect! I have my artwork.

This project is very simple, and quick. It is also inexpensive, and would make a great Christmas gift.

Supplies:
1 embroidery hoop ( large enough for your fabric image)
craft paint ( any color)
paint brush
scrap fabric (larger than embroidery hoop)
scissors

1.Collect supplies.

2. Paint outer embroidery hoop.

3. Let hoop dry.

4. Lay fabric over inner hoop. Center as desired.

5. Place outer hoop on top of fabric. Push down, and pull fabric until it is tight. Tighten screw as much as possible.

6. Cut excess fabric from back.

7. Hang on wall. Make more, all different sizes for a really cool wall decoration.
You can also embellish the fabric for a really unique look.

Now I'm off to make more to cover the whole blank wall behind me. Well maybe not the whole wall but a good portion of it.

Not feeling crafty but like this project check out www.cutoutandcollect.etsy.com for artwork similar to this.
