I'm so Excited!

I've decided to start my own craft night workshops. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time but kept thinking it would only work if I owned my own storefront. I put those thoughts aside and decided to go out and find a location that I could use to host the craft nights. It's a huge step, tomorrow I have to go leave a deposit for the space. I'm scared that no one will show up, but I'm also scared too many people might show interest. I'm a bundle of nerves, but I can't let them bet me. I have to give this a shot. So from today until the 26th I will be prepping not only for some upcoming shows but for my very first workshop. Wish me luck :)

Crafts & Coffee

What inspires you to create your art?
There’s nothing more inspirational than a child’s imagination. In one afternoon, my daughters will hunt monsters, host a tea party and build a tent city. The stories they come up with while they’re playing are priceless. So, naturally, when they ask me to tell them a story, I have to invent something just as fantastic. My paintings are a visual interpretation of these imaginings.  

When did you start your business and what inspired you to do so?
I’ve always been a painter, starting way back when I was a little girl finger-painting pictures on my bedroom wall (my mom didn’t appreciate that very much and I eventually had to move on to paper and canvas), but it’s been on the back burner for a long time. Discovering Etsy and online selling has allowed me to follow that dream while still spending time with my girls. 

What has been your biggest obstacle so far and how did you overcome it?
Finding the right balance between painting and keeping up with the crazy little monkeys I have running around the house has been an interesting journey. Luckily, my girls are very artistic and love to sit down to color and create with me while I’m getting some of my work done. I also have an ongoing battle with the clutter on my dining room table. I’m losing. 

Have your friends and family supported your dream?
It’s amazing how supportive the people in my life have been. They are my own personal cheering section and I wouldn’t have made it this far without them.  

Where do you work from?
My dream is to have a big, open studio filled with lots of counter space and natural light. A place with storage space and a little refrigerator to keep my drink. A sanctuary. However, for now I make do with my dining room table in the kitchen that I have to share with a hundred other projects. At least it’s made of glass, so paint wipes up easily. That’s a bonus. 

What's the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?
Don’t forget to pay yourself. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that with all the excitement that goes along with selling, but in the end, we are working toward making a living doing what we love.  

What memorable responses have you had to your work?
I’ve had several people refer to themselves as collectors of my work. Collectors of MY work? Wow. That still hasn’t sunk in yet. 

What do you like about your work?
I love being able to share what I do with my girls. They have lots of input into what I create, from concept to final critique.  

Professionally, what’s your goal?
To have so much incoming work that having my own studio workspace is an absolute necessity.

What is your dream project?
A series of large scale paintings that all interlock together. It would be so much fun to create something that big.  

If you had it to do over again, what, if anything, would you do differently?
I would have started earlier! I feel like there’s still so much to learn—I wish I had a bigger head start.  

What is your favorite product or service that you offer?
I absolutely love doing custom paintings.  

What is your best-selling item?
The funny little owls that I feature in so many of my paintings are a big hit. They are always getting into mischief.

What’s your favorite color?
It depends—which color paint do I have the most of? Today I like green. Tomorrow, it will probably be blue because I just bought a new tube of cerulean.

What superpower would you want to have and why?
Being in multiple places at one time. That would be super handy in so many ways.

New Printable Party Sets

I just started designing printable party/wedding sets. This is the first set I've designed, it is a Dia de los Muertos wedding set. My wonderful neighbor came over and helped me stage the table for my photos. Considering we used scrap fabric and my little kitchen I think the photos came out awesome. I have 2 more sets waiting to be printed so I can set up another table. The kids loved walking in to the kitchen after school to a table decorated and full of goodies. I'm trying my best not to eat everything myself, but the pan dulce was way to tempting to leave for my hubby.

Custom Printed Fabric

For the past few months I've been printing my own fabric for the dolls I design. Last night I finally took the leap and ordered a yard of custom printed fabric from Spoonflower.com . I can't wait to get my fabric in the mail, it should be here in 7 days. I think I'm as excited as the kids were when they counted down until we left for Disney World. Maybe I'll even make my own count down calendar. I'll post pictures when the fabric gets here.

10 minute Necklace Holder

It's craft show season again, YAY! I've been busy not only designing new products for my upcoming shows, but working on creating displays too. This season I've designed some new jewelry pieces. I have wire jewelry trees, but they take a lot of room on my tables and usually are not tall enough for my necklaces. I researched different jewelry displays but couldn't find anything that met my needs. I needed something that didn't take up a lot of table space (jewelry is only a small part of booth), it had to be tall enough for my long necklaces, and finally it had to be inexpensive. I also wanted something I could easily store in my studio since my closet is bursting already. That's when the idea hit me, all I really needed was a small strip of wood and some nails. I could leave the nails sticking out a bit from the wood and hang the necklaces from them. I could attach the display to the metal shelves that I use in my display and I could also hang it on the wall in my office to store it. This project was so quick and easy I was able to make two in around 30 minutes.

Supplies:
12" scrap of wood
hammer
ruler
pencil
triangle frame hangers
upholstery tacks

Step 1: Attach frame hooks to back side of wood scrap.

Step 2: Turn over and make marks for upholstery tacks 1" apart.

Step 3: Hammer upholstery nails to front.
Step 4: Hang your jewelry rack on the wall, and display your favorite necklaces.

This is how my necklace holder looks hanging from my metal display shelves.

Total project cost- $0 , everything used was already in the garage left over from other projects :)

Goodbye Disney World, We had a Blast

We're back from our week long family vacation to Disney World in Florida. We had a great time, but it's nice to be back in our own beds. Time to get to work on some new projects :)

A Little Patternless Sewing

When I finished my new tank tops I had a skirt in my mind that I wanted to make to wear them with. I know the look isn't for everyone, it's even bolder that I tend to be, but I love this skirt tank combo so much I can't wait to wear it.

The skirt was super simple to make. I'll add some pictures to the tutorial later for now here is a step by step to make your own.

Materials:
1 1/2 - 2 yards of fabric
matching thread
1" no roll elastic
sewing machine

Step 1:
Measure your waist and multiplied that number by 1.5 ( ex: 32 x 1.5 = 48). Then take that number and divided it by 2 ( ex: 48/2= 24).

Step 2:
Measure the length from where you want your waist to where you'd like the hem of your skirt. Add 3" to that number.

Step 3:
Cut out 2 rectangles (ex: 24" x 28").

Step 4:
Sew front and back together with outsides facing each other.

Step 5:
Fold top hem 1/2", then again 1". Pin and sew leaving a small space to thread the elastic through.

Step 6:
Thread elastic, and sew ends together.

Step 7:
Fold bottom hem 1/2", press with hot iron. Fold hem up another 1/2", press with hot iron, pin and sew.

Step 8:
Wear it :)

New Tank Tops

I've had a lot of time on my hands since I graduated earlier this May. I've been trying to keep busy as much as possible while I job hunt. I recently read Miss Scarlett's School of Patternless Sewing by Kathy Cano-Murillo, and I was inspired to make some article of clothing with a Carmen Miranda feel to it. As many may have noticed t-shirt design is kinda my thing. I started sketching and ended up with a whole collection of tank tops. These will be up in my shop soon, limited editions. I can't wait to wear them, especially the Carmen Miranda one. I'm thinking cheetah print or maybe a bright red circle skirt circle skirt and my wonderfully fabulous new platform, sling back, peep toe, ruffled cheetah print shoes. Hair wavy and loose with a huge red flower in my hair, now I'm feeling like Miss Scarlett :)

Magic Shirts Tutorial

The excitement for our summer Disney trip has been building. I had been trying to come up with an idea for some one of a kind tshirts for my kids to wear on the trip over to Disney World, but was having no luck coming up with the perfect magical shirt. Then while picking up some trims for another project I came across Tulip Color Change fabric paints. These 3D paints go on white, but once you step into the suns UV light colors appear magically. What better shirts for their first trip to the Magic Kingdom than "Magic" shirts. After some trial and error I finally figured out how to make the magic paints work on dark colored tshirt.
Want to make your own?
Here's how:

Supplies:
T shirt
Card board (for inside the shirt)
Tulip Slick dimensional fabric paint black & white
Tulip Color Change fabric paint: red, blue, green (other colors available)
foam brush
stencil (or freehand your design onto the shirt)

Step 1: Place your stencil on your shirt and outline it with the black Tulip paint. Allow to dry.

Step 2: Fill in black outline with white paint. You may need 2-3 coats. Allow to dry.

Step 3: Paint in design (I chose stripes) using Tulip Color Change paints.

Step 4: Out line design with white paint. Allow to dry overnight.

Step 5: Head outside into the sun and watch you white design "magically" turn to color.

Hand Beaded Sugar Skull

When I was little I remember watching my mom sit with a stack of cut out felt shapes and a box full of sequins and beads. She would make big beaded broaches in the images of Santa, Poinsettias, valentines hearts, and pretty much everything else. Every now and then she'd let me help with one, half way through I'd get bored and give up. Last year I bought some fabric that I loved, and wanted to make some throw pillows with. After the first couple of pillows were done, they were cute but I couldn't help but think they were missing something. I dug through my craft closet and found a package of sequins and seed beads and knew that was exactly what was missing from my pillows, some sparkle.

I finished the first couple of pillows and was hooked. I understood why my mom liked beading so much. I could sit in front of the tv and zone out while I beaded. Nothing to over think, no excessive planning, just me, my fabric and my box of bead.
Since the first pillows I've made a few dozen more. I've even designed my own images to bead. I've managed to sell my pillows at local craft shows, get them featured on the Dallas Observer website ( http://www.dallasobserver.com/slideshow/etsy-dallas-3rd-annual-jingle-bash-31900388/4/ ), and even had a few shops start carrying my pillows.
I decided to trying some thing bigger than my pillows, something to redeem my childhood give ups. I needed to think big. I remembered I had some old frames in the garage, just waiting for the perfect project. It came to me, a huge beaded sugar skull. I've been working on it for almost a week and tonight I finished it. I think I can consider myself redeemed, don't you?

My version of a Look Book

Beaded Pillows

I remember my mom making sequins, beaded pins when I was little. Hearts for Valentines Day, Christmas trees, Jack o Lanterns, you name the occasion she had a pin for it. She let me make a few every now and then. Recently I found the cutest fabrics, I wanted to make pillows with it but felt they needed a little extra something to make them stand out from the crowd. I pulled out a box of sequins and seed beads while cleaning my office and I remembered those pins my mom made. I sat down and started sewing them to the fabric. My mom was here last week, she helped me with beading the pillows. WOW is she fast, for every 1 I made she had finished 2. It's been fun and relaxing beading the fabric panels. I actually have so many more ideas I would like to bead. Here are some of the finished pillows. I'm planing a tutorial to be posted soon :)

Of all the rooms in our home the master bedroom has seen the least love. I decided it is finally time to give it a makeover. Nothing big, we don't have time to paint the room, so I thought I'd make some art to hang over the head board. I had a couple of painted canvasses that were sitting in the garage, instead of buying new ones I decided to reuse them.
Here's a little step by step tutorial on how to make inexpensive wall art using old canvasses.

Supplies:
used canvasses
paint (I used acrylic craft paint)
sponge brushes
various size paint brushes
white glue
newspaper
water
chalk

Step 1: Cover canvas in newspaper using watered down white glue and a sponge brush. Smooth out bubbled areas. (Leave a few bubbles to create texture) Allow to dry completely.

Step 2: Prime the newspaper covered canvas in white paint.

Step 3: Paint background colors. I watered down some of the colors and painted them with a sponge brush. Allow paint to dry.

Step 4: Draw image or wording on to canvas with chalk.

Step 5: Paint in image. Allow to dry.

Step 6: Use watered down paints to paint a layer over the image. Allow to dry.

Step 7: Hang on wall and enjoy :)

I'm Back at Blogging

It's been a rough few months, I'm going to school full time now, raising two growing boys and running a business. I've wanted to blog but I can't ever seem to find the time. I'm back now, going to try to work in at least 1 post a week, whether it's how to, just showing off some recent projects or sharing my Etsy favorites, there will be a new post. I thought I would start off today by showing off my most recent project.

I bought this white mirror/ cork board combo at a garage sale a few weeks ago for 50 cents. This weekend I sanded it down, painted it red, added some red glitter paint and decoupaged loteria cards onto it. I finished it off by adding glitter details to the cards and glueing on some bling. I absolutely love the way it came out. I can't wait until my husband hangs it up in my office.

Scrapbooking for Boys?

A few months ago I thought that maybe the big scrapbook supply companies had opened their eyes and realized moms of boys want to scrapbook too. I found some cute pirate kits, and a whole line of boys papers All About Boys by DCWV. Even some rockstar papers were boyish, score! I was so excited to finally have stuff to work with on my sons books. WRONG. Though now I have "older" boy supplies, I still find myself stuck with baby supplies that just aren't right for my boys. I've decided to sit down and sketch out my own "baby boy" paper designs. I'll be heading to the hardware store later to pick up paint swatches to use as color inspiration. I picked up a new sketch book to devote entirely to Baby BOYS :) I'm thinking cute-ish dinos, argyles , stripes, bugs (not creepy, not cartoony, and not girly) , & zoo animals. I'd love to have some suggestions for baby boys scrapbook kits. If this is successful I hope to figure out how to upload the images for download use by you guys.

2009 was a long hard year. I've gone back to school, which has caused me to slack on things like this blog. I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things while I'm on break right now, and hopefully keep up with my blog on the weekends.

This weekend I've been taped to my work table (literally at times) working on duct tape projects for the teen trend class I'll be teaching the next few months. Some of the projects I came up with are a duct tape wallet, an iPod touch case, rose hair clip and a cuff bracelet. Working on these projects really took me back. In high school m cousin and I were obsessed with making things out of duct tape. Lucky for us her mom kept us stocked up with all the colors we could imagine. We made wallets, and belts, even tote bags. They were so much fun. Now I'm back making cute things out of something most people consider ugly. Here are some pictures of this weekends projects. The next duct tape project I plan on making is a guitar strap for my little cousin, she's excited and so am I.

New Portfolio

I ran across these plain black reusable portfolios at the art supply store for $1.70. They did the job they were meant to to, but everyone in the art department at school was carrying them around. I needed mine to be different. So I headed to the fabric store , bought 1 1/2 yd of fabric and started sewing. This is what I ended up with. Bet no one on campus has one like it :)

School Has Begun!

School started last week. I was very nervous, putting my little one in daycare, my oldest going full day to school and me going back after 5 years. It's been hectic, but I'm starting to get into the swing of things. I like my classes so far, I'm enjoying breaking out of my usual thought process for new projects. I thought I'd share my first project with you. We are to make a self portrait using photos, that doesn't mean me taking pictures of myself myspace style, holding the camera facing me while driving, or facing the camera at the mirror to show how awesome I look :) We are to collage photos that represent ourselves. They can not be cut, cropped or computer altered in any form. Here is a sneak peak of what I have so far. Strange huh. Well let me explain. I have two children, boys, and they are a huge part of who I am. Not only that but there have been countless times that I've heard, "wow he looks just like you" "He has your eyes" "They look so much alike" "Did you clone yourself" the list goes on. So what I have done is photographed myself and my children, taken different features and made 1 face. This is not the final piece, I'm still playing with eyes and noses. The project is due next week, so far my prof is diggin the idea. Lets hope I get an A.

Yup, it's that time again. Back to school, time to buy supplies. 1 week left of summer here at our house, so now that I've got the kids ready it's time to get myself ready. This summer I went back to school. 5 years after graduating college I'm back. I'm working on my bachelors, and getting a teaching degree :) I think my favorite part is getting ready and buying fresh new supplies. There is something about a brand new notebook, and the smell of a new box of crayons that makes me smile. I decided to share my Etsy favorites for back to school.

When I first designed my website I really wanted to do illustrated silhouettes with the actual shirts on them. But I threw out the idea for some reason. Now I'm back to it. What do you think? My First Video Tutorial

I just got my new MacBook Pro, and I've been figuring out how to use all the awesome software that came with it.

I tried out iMovie yesterday and made a screen printing tutorial to share with

everyone. This is my first attempt at video tutorials, so please be kind I was

nervous. Hope you find this informative, and I'd love to see pictures if you try it out.

Below is a list of materials that you can print and take to the store.

Toy Time

We finally bought a toddler bed for the little one. My oldest wanted his brother to sleep in his room, so we stuck the bed in there. Now I'm cleaning out toys like crazy, every inch of his room has toys in it. I decided to buy 2 small toy boxes, one for each of them, and purge the crazy mess of toys. Whatever doesn't fit in the bins will find a new home out of my house. I had been looking for toy boxes for the longest time, and not finding anything that matched either room. I finally found some unfinished wood boxes on sale at Joanns. I asked my oldest what he wanted on his box and he replied "A scary T-Rex!" So I got to painting, and even let him help. I like they way it came out. I still have one to go. My son stamped the footprints, I made the stamps out of fun foam.

Look mom I'm baking!

Well I'm not the best cook in the world, but I love to make things. I have this crazy part of my brain that thinks I can make anything I see. My friend and I have been planning a joint birthday party for our little ones, they are 1 week apart in age. We decided on a pirate and mermaid theme. We were trying to decide what kind of cake to have, and came up with a sandcastle. Both of us are artist, we love to craft, but cooks we are not. So I decided to give it a test run and try to make a sandcastle cake. I didn't turn out perfect, but now I know what I need to do to make it right for the party.

These are the test run cake pictures. The next one will be bigger, better, and neater. It was fun making it, my grandma supervised and gave me tips on how to make it better. I will post pictures of the party cake next month after the party :)

The Etsy Dallas Spring Bash was a blast. There were so many great artist. Sadly since I had to fly solo, I was unable to do any shopping while I was there. I did however make note on all the cute things I wanted, so I could head to the computer and order them when I got back home (with earnings in hand.) I've been looking for school supplies, I start next month, and since no ordinary pencil case will do I've been searching Etsy for the perfect one. I found it, I didn't even have to look very far. Cheyenne of CutOutAndCollect had the perfect one. Cheyenne is part of the Esty Dallas team and has an aray of cute zipper pouches, perfect to use as wallets or in my case a pencil case. I love the pink octipi pouch, my favorite part of it is that when I open it there are mermaids inside. I love mermaids! She even sent me an extra little gift, a second pouch with some really cute cows. I stuck some colored pencils and post it notes in that one, and it went straight into my purse. Now when we are at a resturant and they don't have crayons or kids menus, out come the cows and the kiddos have something to do.

Mothers Day Gift- tutorial

Mother's Day is next weekend, are you ready. My parents and grandparents love homemade gifts, especially when my boys make them. Being that the kids are so young (5 & 1) it is some times hard to find projects that they can help with. This is perfect for the little ones. Hand print flowers, messy enough for kids to have fun, not so messy mom can't clean up fast.

Materials:
Tshirt or canvas tote bag
Tulip brand soft fabric paint
Tulip brand paint writers
Sponge paint brush
baby wipes
card board
Hands!

Prepare your shirt or bag by placing card board inside so that front and back don't stick together.
Paint childs hand, and place on shirt/bag. Repeat in the shape of a flower (4 or 5 hand prints).
Clean child up with baby wipes.
Using paint brush add a steam and leaves to your flower.
Paint dot in center of hand prints.
Use paint writers to personalize message. Add initials and date.

Upcycled Jeans Tutorial

Two weeks ago I cleaned out my son's closet and found 10 pairs of jeans all fairly new, all busted at the knees. He loves to dance and show off his "cool moves" which are half break dance half kung fu. It never fails he busts his jeans at the knees. I was taught growing up that we do not waste anything that could be used by someone else, so it's really hard for me just to throw things away (especially pants that have only been worn a handful of times.) So I stacked all the jeans up on my sewing table and thought about what I would do with them. Then there I was in the grocery store check out line and I picked up People Style magazine only to see pages full of ripped up "Boyfriend" jeans. They are the hot style this season. The light went off in my head, I'll turn my little boys jeans into cute "Boyfriend" style girls jeans. I pulled out my fabric stach and picked out my favorite coordinating fabrics, cut out patches and went to town. I made around 7 pairs, each one different, and even went to the thrift store to see if I could find any other sizes. I found a couple of itty bitty baby jeans and a super cute short sleeve denim jacket. I have a few left to fix up, but I've placed a couple on Etsy already.

Wanna make your own?

Here's a short tutorial.

Materials:
Jeans (new or used)
thread
fabric (2- 3 prints 1/2 yard each)
embroidery thread
Ruler
scissors
sewing machine
Steam a Seam sticky back fusible web
E6000 glue
rhinestones

Cut out fabric patches and lay them out on your jeans.
Sew patches on inside of jeans to show through knee holes. Use sewing machine zigzag stitch if pant legs fit on sewing machine. Or hand sew knee patches.
Cut sticky back webbing to match your patches.
Iron on patches to jeans.
Hand sew decorative stitches around patches using embroidery thread.
Use E6000 glue to add rhinestones.
Cut 2 rectangles at least 10" wide and however long the leg opening of you pant is. (example the jeans shown were 10" x 14")
Fold in half so that both 10" ends match and sew seam.
Now fold band in half.
Turn pants inside out and pin band to pant hem.
Sew band to pants.
Turn right side out, and fold up cuff.

Now your little girl (or you) will have some super cute OOAK jeans. I'd love to see your creations, send them to me or comment with a link to your site.

Sweetheart Shrines

I've admired the art of shrine making for a while now. I had never really tried my hand at it until recently. Shrine making is so much fun, there are so many ways to make them. I used some small shadow boxes to start out with. I sat at me table covered in pin up print outs, paint, sequins, glitter pens and flowers. I wasn't sure where I was going with everything spread out. Then I grabbed a pin up and started to glitter her. I put her on top of a piece of glitter card stock, but it was just too plain. So I drew on the glitter paper with glitter pens.... oh on glitter overload! Then they started to come together. I knew what I wanted to make, and I went full force, 5 shrines at once! I was cutting, glittering, and gluing all over the place. When it was all over these are what I ended up with. I think they came out cute, I'm addicted now. I have a few black boxes left that I need to fix up. My next project is a stack of plain brown frames. I have an idea, but you'll just have to wait and see what I come up with.

I finally had a chance to finish up some of my Spring Break projects and get photos taken of them. I need to take better pictures, but these are okay for now. I had a bunch of small wooden crosses, wings, and heart as well as bags full of sequins. I've also found a new love of glitter glue pens. I can't help the urge to glitter anything in sight. The heart magnets didn't come out the greatest, but they are pretty cute. I found the Virgin Mary and Jesus images on Etsy in Passion Fruits shop. The images are great quality, I was able to blow up the ones I really liked and not lose any pixels.

Tomorrow I'll put up some pictures of the Sweetheart Shrines that I've been working on.

My Newest Creation

This project has been on my mind for over a year now. I finally had the chance to make it happen. As you may know by now I LOVE Mexican inspired artwork and imagery. I'm also a big fan of sugar skulls and all things Dia De Los Muertos. I however am not a quilter. I've tried my hand at the little squares, not my thing. I've read books and magazines to learn the "Proper" way to make quilts and applique, but really is there a "proper" way to make art? I don't believe so. I put the books back on the shelf and pulled out my sketch book. I drew a couple of designs that I wanted to work on, the Sugar Skulls being on the top of my list. Once I had my design drawn I pulled out my stack of tissue paper. Just plain old gift bag stuffing tissue paper. It was the perfect size. I drew out piece by piece each part of the sugar skulls on the tissue and cut them out. I arranged them on my table to make sure they were the right sizes for what I wanted to do. Then I headed over to Joanns (Quilters Quarters were on sale for $1) and I picked out the colors I wanted to use and I even found the perfect background fabric. It's black with colorful dots, it reminds me of confetti. I cut out all my pieces from the fabric, pinned together and started sewing. No special fusing, just fabric, pins and the zig zag stich on my machine. It took me around 3 days, just because I had a lot of other work on my plate, but I finished it. It's not proper, or perfect but I love it. I'm starting on my second quilt, a sacred heart this time. I've run out of black thread so it's back to the store for my. Hope my little piece of art inspires you to make something unproper today.

I've been swamped with orders the past two weeks that I haven't had a chance to post and tutorials or photos of the projects I was working on. I still need to review my Yudu machine, but I don't like the design I used for my first try I really want to show off something better. So in the meantime I want to share with you an Etsy find I love.

Edesse Designs, I love their donut daily planner. I'm trying to get more organized, scheduling classes, processing orders, tracking shipping, and paying bills, so this little planner is just what I need. Not only that but it's such a cute design and I have a soft spot for DONUTS :)

I got my Yudu printer today . I would be jumping for joy except they did not come with the accessory kit shown on the box. The store will be calling me when they come in so I can pick mine up. That means no playing with my new toy today :( I did however pick up some extra supplies for 40% off. It was crazy, I was called at 10am and told that they had come in, but there were only 4 available, by the time I got to the store- 10:10am- there were only 2 left and the supplies were almost picked clean. Give me a week or so and I will have a review up. Happy Friday :)

Waiting Patiently...

Or trying to at least. Last Thursday my Joann's weekly sales flier came in the mail. I sat down only to jump out of my seat and scream "AWESOME!" A few months ago the education coordinator had told me that they would be getting some screen printing kits in, but she wasn't sure what they were, (I teach screenprinting at Joanns). I was happy that they would possibly carry more of the supplies I use, but I didn't think to much of it after that. That was until I opened my flier to see the Yudu screenprinting kit. Its a self contained unit, you use it from start to finish to make your screens and print your shirts. It is so awesome, and even better it is on SALE. First thing Friday morning I ran over to the store to get mine. Sadly they weren't in stock yet. I've been waiting checking emails to hear that they are in. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. Hopefully they will be in soon. I teach classes all week so I will be in and out of the store hoping that mine will be there soon. I will post a review once I work with it.

How long have you been crafting?
I have been crafting since I was old enough to hold a crayon in my hand! My mother was an oil and china painter, and she sewed many of my clothes when I was little. She was a constant inspiration for creativity. When I was very young, she also taught me to sew, and my friends all thought I had the best dressed Barbies in the neighborhood. My grandmother inspired me, too. She always had the COOLEST craft supplies that my sister and I could create with anytime we visited her! (Remember those pieces of lime, yellow, bright orange, etc. fake fur you could make into fun critters with a little glue and some googly eyes??? ...I know I am dating myself, but oh, what fun it was to let our imaginations take us anywhere they wished!)

What inspires your art?
The thing that most inspires my art now is the sheer joy of creating it. Making things with my very own hands is such a wonderful escape for me. ...I LOVE the rose bushes in my yard. Flowers and all things timeless and vintage are also inspirations for me.

What are your favorite methods / materials to use in your artwork?
I love to create jewelry! I enjoy repurposing long lost treasures into fun, new jewelry. I cannot get my hands on enough glass flowers and beads, and I am shameless about collecting vintage jewelry and "things" that could someday be turned into new goodies to wear! I also have a fun time creating collages. Old ephemera and photos seem to be nearly as addictive for me as collecting wonderful old "junk," ...ummm, treasures, that is!

What sets you apart from other artist?
The look of my creations tend to be on the "soft" side. They are usually more sweet and dainty, and they always have a vintage appeal about them. I am creative minded, but also business minded. Superior customer service is very important to me. I try to never lose sight of the fact that without my customers (no matter how large or small a sale), I would have no business, and I really enjoy giving my customers the special attention they deserve. It is fun to juggle my online Etsy shops, SweetMelodies.etsy.com and CreativeElements.etsy.com , with being a stay at home mommy and wife. I work at home during the day, keeping regular "shop hours," and enjoy my babies as soon as I pick them up from school in the afternoons. How long have you been crafting:
I would say a looonng time, although I'm not telling exactly how long. When I was about 8, I remember my mom introducing me to embroidery. As a 20-something I discovered counted cross stitch and loved that even tho I didn't consider myself super creative I could produce wonderfully beautiful pieces just by following directions (I was good at that--LOL). My hubby and I are now empty nesters and discovered the wonderful world of rocks about a year ago.

What inspires you: Hubby and I design our pieces together. He is actually the more creative one (see above), and once you get to know us you can figure out his vs hers. I find that the rocks are inspiring in themselves. Mother nature does a pretty awesome job and there's nothing like looking at all the colors in the stones and "listening" to them as you put a piece together.

Favorite materials: Rocks of course-LOL!! Seriously, we use lots of stones in our designs and wanted to share the love and keep them affordable. To that end, we normally don't use lots of sterling silver, but should a customer want it, we can supply it.

What sets us apart: A couple of things. First, I try very hard to find really unusual stones that you don't often see other designers/makers use. Second, we don't ever consider any of our pieces a finished product until our buyers are happy with them. We do a lot of craft shows and spend just as much time resizing, creating and re-creating pieces as we do selling completed ones. Oh, and I almost forgot!! We use magnetic clasps. We've shopped around to find really strong ones and they're great, especially on bracelets. I get dressed all by myself--LOL!! We do also carry traditional ones and can substitute them out.

I have been knitting longer than many of you readers have been around! I'm working on a spring scarf collection which will be lighter weight using a luscious bamboo yarn. I'm also toying with the idea of adding a spa collection... but now I'm getting ahead of myself!

What sets you apart from other artists?
As a fiber artist it is pretty hard to set myself completely apart from other artists. My passion for knitting perhaps? My pride in my work? Basically, I LOVE TO KNIT! I love the feel of the yarn in my hands. I love using pattern, texture & design to make unique items that feel good and look great. I love watching my ideas become an item that is beautiful, useful, comfy, trendy… FUN!

A big inspiration to me is vintage. I love vintage and like to add a little touch of it to some of my pieces, along with nature. Enjoy finding beautiful pieces from nature and turning them into jewelery. This makes it a one of a kind pieces. Other people art inspires me also. There is tons of wonderful artists out there.

What is your favorite method/ material?
My methods of my items are mostly hand designed and cut. I don't know if its my favorite as it would be nice and quicker to die cut or laser but that is the method I use. I sketch up the designs and them make cut out to trace with. I luv working with pieces from nature, leather and vintage fabrics. I like to recycle and that would be the reason for the items I like to work with.

What sets you apart from other artist?
I like to add a little touch of something I luv that is different from others. One thing Ive started doing is making some of my pieces reversible, known as "2 in one" so that the items are like having two different types of necklaces for the price of one. For example one side will be a solid while the other is a mixture of colors.

How long have you been crafting?
I've been crafting for as long as I can remember. It was always considered a bit odd, because I was the only one in my family with any interest in the arts or crafting. Now I do my best to spark an interest in my own kids and give them the inspiration and materials to foster the interests that they do have.

What inspires your art?
I draw inspiration from many things, but a lot of it has to do with the colors of the materials I'm working with and the way sunlight hits them and changes them. I love shiny, pretty things and many times I'm inspired by little more than the way sunlight reflects off of any given object.

What are your favorite methods/ materials to use in your artwork?
I love working with glass... stained glass, vitreous glass, and I even use a lot of reclaimed glass in my work. Sometimes I paint the back of clear glass for a different effect or color combination. I always tumble my glass to remove most of the rough edges for safer handling. I love to create when I have plenty of time and limited interuptions so I can get completely lost in the work. Sometimes with 3 kids it can be difficult, but that just makes me all the more appreciative of the times when it does happen!

I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and pride myself on my unique designs and high quality craftsmanship. I also love what I do, and I think it shows in my work.

I love polymer clay and felt most. It's so versatile, i can make whatever i want with those materials. I also collect kawaii (=cute in japanese) fabrics which i am afraid to use because they are too cute. I learn everything by myself and experiment a lot with different materials.

I love to do canvas painting with acrylics and also draw with black marker.

Friday night I ran across the great news on Etsy, the CSPIA is giving us 1 year before they start to enforce the new law. That means we have a year to convince them that handmade companies need different regulations than large corporations. I thought I'd share the Etsy article for those who have yet to read it. We are so excited to announce that the Commission has voted for a "Stay of Enforcement of Certain Testing and Certification Requirements of CPSIA" — which means that they are proposing a 1 year suspension of the burden of lead testing and certification while they take more time to review the rules and plan enforcement! All of your hard work is paying off (for the time being at least!). You wouldn't have to pay to do the certification and testing, though you are still liable if your products are found to have lead. We are so pleased that artisans and vintage sellers got their voices heard. Your hard work is not over; we must continue to play a role in advocating for small business people throughout the coming year.

CPSC Grants One Year Stay of Testing and Certification Requirements for Certain Products

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted unanimously (2-0) to issue a one year stay of enforcement for certain testing and certification requirements for manufacturers and importers of regulated products, including products intended for children 12 years old and younger. These requirements are part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which added certification and testing requirements for all products subject to CPSC standards or bans.

Significant to makers of children’s products, the vote by the Commission provides limited relief from the testing and certification requirements which go into effect on February 10, 2009 for new total lead content limits (600 ppm), phthalates limits for certain products (1000 ppm), and mandatory toy standards, among other things. Manufacturers and importers – large and small – of children’s products will not need to test or certify to these new requirements, but will need to meet the lead and phthalates limits, mandatory toy standards and other requirements.

The decision by the Commission gives the staff more time to finalize four proposed rules which could relieve certain materials and products from lead testing and to issue more guidance on when testing is required and how it is to be conducted.

The stay will remain in effect until February 10, 2010, at which time a Commission vote will be taken to terminate the stay.

The stay does not apply to:

*

Four requirements for third-party testing and certification of certain children’s products subject to:
o

The ban on lead in paint and other surface coatings effective for products made after December 21, 2008;
o

The standards for full-size and non full-size cribs and pacifiers effective for products made after January 20, 2009;
o

The ban on small parts effective for products made after February 15, 2009; and
o

The limits on lead content of metal components of children’s jewelry effective for products made after March 23, 2009.
*

Certification requirements applicable to ATV’s manufactured after April 13, 2009.
*

Pre-CPSIA testing and certification requirements, including for: automatic residential garage door openers, bike helmets, candles with metal core wicks, lawnmowers, lighters, mattresses, and swimming pool slides; and
*

Pool drain cover requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act.

The stay of enforcement provides some temporary, limited relief to the crafters, children’s garment manufacturers and toy makers who had been subject to the testing and certification required under the CPSIA. These businesses will not need to issue certificates based on testing of their products until additional decisions are issued by the Commission. However, all businesses, including, but not limited to, handmade toy and apparel makers, crafters and home-based small businesses, must still be sure that their products conform to all safety standards and similar requirements, including the lead and phthalates provisions of the CPSIA.

Handmade garment makers are cautioned to know whether the zippers, buttons and other fasteners they are using contain lead. Likewise, handmade toy manufacturers need to know whether their products, if using plastic or soft flexible vinyl, contain phthalates.

The stay of enforcement on testing and certification does not address thrift and second hand stores and small retailers because they are not required to test and certify products under the CPSIA. The products they sell, including those in inventory on February 10, 2009, must not contain more than 600 ppm lead in any accessible part. The Commission is aware that it is difficult to know whether a product meets the lead standard without testing and has issued guidance for these companies that can be found on our Web site.

The Commission trusts that State Attorneys General will respect the Commission's judgment that it is necessary to stay certain testing and certification requirements and will focus their own enforcement efforts on other provisions of the law, e.g. the sale of recalled products.

CSPIA Awareness

As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all.

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

A few post back I mentioned that I had found some really cute little frames in the dollar section at Target. I finally got around to using them yesterday. I LOVE vintage art work, like pin ups, and I also love Mexican art work, so I decided to print out some pictures of Mexican calendar girls and give them a personal touch. At first I was going to decorate the frames and leave the images alone, but I love solid black frames. I don't know why, I just do. I decided to pull out my glitter paint and add a little umph to the pictures. I glittered some details on them, flowers, dresses, ect. I also received my mini cards that I ordered on etsy, added some backgrounds and framed them. I hung them all up over my drawing table, I still have room for more :) I'm very pleased with how they came out. Maybe they will give me some inspriation for future projects.

Diamond Glaze Project

It took me a few tries to get it right, but I finally made a photo pendent of my boys. The pendent is huge, but I love it. I printed the photo on card stock, sealed it with Microglaze on both sides, glued it on to the pendent with craft glue making sure the edges were sealed also. Then I waited for around 4 hours until I was sure the glue was dry. I put another coat of Microglaze on the photo, then poured on the Diamond Glaze carefully not to get any bubbles. I've let it dry all night, and probaly will let it dry for another day or so before I wear it. Now I need to bead a necklace or find on that I can slip this pendent onto.

Unfinshed Frames= NEW PROJECT

This morning while getting groceries at Target I did my usual stroll through the dollar area. I wasn't really looking for anything, just wondering if maybe there were still a few $1 calenders left. I found a small cork bulletin board white a teal frame that matches my office area, for $2.50 I couldn't walk away from it. It's kinda small, I might have to buy 1 or 2 more and stack them, it might look really cool that way. I also found a couple of packs of square frames, 3 per pack, unfinished wood. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them until a few minutes ago when I found the cards above. I'm going to paint the frames and hand these cards in my office. They match my Mexican folk art theme. I also found some photo key chains that I plan to make into mini altered art key chains, just think religious images, glitter, paint :) I can't wait to get started.

Tomorrow is open house at your local Joann's store, make sure you head over and check out the demos for the classes that are available. I will not be demoing at my store, I will be teaching a teen sewing class. Hopefully I will get more sign ups for future classes. I really enjoy teaching!

Screenprinting Class

I'm teaching a simple diy screenprinting class tonight. I have a terrible sinus headache and a ton of work to do. I have yet to change out of my sweats today. I don't know how I'm going to get dressed and to class, but I will be there. I love teaching craft classes. I hope to put up a tutorial for screenprinting later, once I get my work done. I also added some cool gadgets to my google front page, like a to do list. Now I can keep up with my projects and not have to be searching for a scribble pad all day :)

Sewing Supply Carrier

I'm Exhausted

I finally finished and shipped a huge order yesterday, then stayed up late sewing. I'm teaching sewing classes at the local craft store and I needed a storage/ carrier for my supplies. Something small enough to store and take back and forth. I came up with my own design/ pattern. I'll be posting photos later. My first sewing class went well, I had 3 students, I was only expecting 1 :) The kids were really great and their pillowcase came out great. They were so proud. I remember taking craft classes when I was little. Every summer my mom would sign us up for whatever classes we wanted to take at the local craft coop. My favorite was always tshirt painting. Who would have guessed that it would be my career so many years later.

More Shrink Paper Fun

I've been playing with Shrink paper the past few days. These are what I came up with, photo charms :) I still haven't gotten it perfect, but they are getting better. I've made a few for myself and other family members. I need to go to the store and get some more to play with I have a ton of ideas to work on. I better get back to work.

I've been playing with shrink paper all week. It is so much fun now that I know how to use it. I've gone through a few packs, burnt a few designs, but I figured it out finally. I can't wait to unveil the stuff that I'm making. I just need to find some time to take pictures.

Other big news, I'm going to be teaching kids sewing classes at the local Joann's and I finally got sign ups for my screen printing class. Whoohoo!

What happens now???

I've been putting off writing this mainly in hopes that some solid information would show up and save my business. Many of you who buy handmade have already heard of the new CSPA & CSPIA laws that go into effect next month. For those who haven't to sum it up the new laws require ALL items made for children 12 and under to be tested for lead. Sounds good right, no more toxic toys from other countries. BUT to me it means I will no longer ba able to produce baby and toddler clothing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the testing. What I am against is the extremes that we have to go through, and the pricing per test (any where between $500- $1000 each test). Some items require more than one test. I've been keeping up with most of the updates, however I'm still very confussed as to what will happen. I've read now that one of a kind items will not require testing, which helps some small businesses not mine though. I hand print, sew clothing and make tutus, they are not one of a kind. I create a design and make each item, but since I make mulitple of the item I am not exempt from this law. The onesies I print on will already be tested before I buy them, as is the ink, fabric, thread, elastic and everything else that goes into making my products. So why should I have to test again, is there some kind of chemical reaction that will happen once I put the ink on the fabric. I'm not a chemist but I'm pretty sure the answer is no. Excuse me if I'm starting to ramble. I'm growing impatient trying to figure out what will happen to my business as well as the other million small businesses that will be effected. I've worked so hard for the past two years to pick up all the clients I now have and can't imagine all this hard work going to waste.

Also write to congress and ask them to reconsider, rewrite the law to help save us small business owners.
From today until Feb. 10 I will feature companies that will be effected with this law. All these items will no longer be legal to sell or buy after Feb. 10 if nothing is done.

It's been a long holiday...

to say the least. I've been extremely busy traveling back to my hometown for Christmas, then another long trip home for New Years. We for the most part had a great time. Sadly I worked on a large order the entire time our family was visiting. They were a great help with the kids, I would have been able to finish it so fast with out them here. I finished the order yesterday and today I painted a mural for a family member. It was her Christmas present, she has yet to see it but I hope she likes it. I spent all day on it, I didn't even realize how fast the time went by. It was so quiet I just stood there and painted uninterrupted for 6 hours (it took 2 coats). I really need to work like that more often. Hopefully I'll get to paint my son's room this summer. I have an idea for an awesome comic book style sky line. What could be better for a super hero right? I hope every had a great holiday season. I'm hoping to get back to my everyday starting tomorrow, so check back.

Longing for Home

I miss home alot, especially this time of year. I can't wait to get back to South Texas and be with family. One of my favorite things this time of year is Tamales. I love them sooooo much, I can't wait to get to my in laws house and stuff my face. I've been missing them so much that since I don't know how to make them myself I thought I'd make something to show my love of the holidays and tamales. I made these little Christmas trees out of the corn husk that are used to wrap tamales. I didn't take pictures as I was making them but here is a short photoless tutorial.

Supplies:
Corn Husk
styrofome cone (floral dept at craft store)
Glue gun
Glue sticks
School glue
Glitter
Mini tree ornaments

1. Tear corn husk into smaller leaves.
2. Glue corn husk in layers, each layer shorter than the bottom.
3. Once you've finished all your layers, take a stripe of corn husk and tye the top.
4. Cut off leave on top of the tied area.
5. Put glue on leaves where you'd like glitter.
6. Sprinkle glitter.
7. Glue on ornaments.

Now you have a lovely little tamale tree. If only tamales grew on trees, I'd have a yard full :)

I had never made Gingerbread men before, but my son was obsessed with making some. He recently read the story, The Gingerbread Man, at school and loved it. They even went on an adventure through the school looking for their runaway gingerbread man. Today we made our own, no not from scratch, but from a mix I bought at Joanns. I filled plastic sandwich bags with icing and let him at them. We both had fun decorating them. They might not be they pretty but they were yummy, and will be a great memory. Next year maybe my little one will help decorate too.

Finished Mural

This is one of the murals I did for our little cousins. It came out rather nice. Only 5 days until Christmas, I'm still lacking a few gifts and I've ran out of wrapping paper. Looks like I may have to head out to the stores today and fight my way through the crowds :(

Later tonight we will be baking gingerbread men to leave out for Santa, that should be fun. I can't wait to see how my son decorates them.

It's good to be Crafty

One Christmas years ago my sister, cousins, and I were in love with the New Kids on the Block. A year later we were over them and everyone knew except for one of our uncles. He thought he had bought us the coolest gift ever, New Kids on the Block sweaters. We were all horrified. There was no way we'd be caught wearing NKOB sweaters, they were so lame. My poor heartbroken uncle took them all back.
Well here I am 14 or so years later shopping at Target when I find High School Musical 3 and Camp Rock dvd games. They look so cool, I want them for myself (yes I am a fan of all the Disney musicals). I buy them for my little cousins who are 12 &13. I call their moms only to find out that the girls are "too cool" for HSM & Camp Rock. My heart just broke. What will I do now, I'm not about to stand in a huge line to return them only to have to search for a new gift. This is were being crafty comes in handy. They've just had their rooms painted and would like to have murals painted. So that's what I'm doing, painting murals for Christmas. I've finished one, and should have the second done after New Years.
The moral of my story is "Kids be kind to your family members that give you bad gifts, someday you will be that old out of touch adult doing the gift giving." Happy Holidays.
